never let anyone tell you you don’t deserve what you want
-Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger) in 10 Things I Hate About You
OK but did you know that my queen Julia Stiles and Joseph Gordon-Levitt dated each other during filming and went on to live in the same college dorm?
(I’m working my way through the comfort movie thread)
I love this Anaïs Nin quote always, but it’s felt especially close lately:
“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.”
some notable (and less notable) things
Minnesota just passed the PRO Act, enshrining the right to abortion in the state! They are the first state to do so since SCOTUS struck down Roe. Abortion was already legal in Minnesota, but this is great because it’ll protect access if new anti-abortion legislation is introduced in the future.
A suggestion to combat that annoying anxiety that can come from watching tense/cringey/stressful/scary scenes on tv: mute it! I’ve noticed that so much of my emotional response comes from the sound/music cues, and it’s totally fine to watch without if you need to.
I recently started watching the Australian reality show The Farmer Wants a Wife. It’s like a low-stress, agriculture-based The Bachelor. They refer to the eligible dudes (there are multiple per season!) as Farmer [Name], ie Farmer Frank. It’s very cute.
I made the Earl Grey Tea Cake from Everyday Cake and am now fully on board with using Earl Grey tea leaves in any baked good where you would use poppy seeds (the bergamot!!)
It was brought to my attention (via this excellent account devoted entirely to the #1 grocery store, H-E-B) that there are two different bakeries that make Girl Scout cookies (ABC Bakers and Little Brownie Bakers) and so there are regional differences at the cookie level.
In all, there are six Girl Scout cookies that have noticeable differences between bakers: Thin Mints, S'mores, Caramel deLites/Samoas, Peanut Butter Patties/Tagalongs, Peanut Butter Sandwich/Do-si-dos, and Shortbread Cookies/Trefoils.
And if you’re still looking to buy cookies, consider doing so by choosing a troop from the Justice for Black Girls Black Girl Scout Virtual Marketplace, where you can support tiny entrepreneurs from across the US by purchasing from their virtual stores! The Supreme Court does not determine our fundamental right to bodily autonomy.
baking tip of the week
Make sure to scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl with a rubber spatula periodically while using a stand mixer. You don’t want to end up with a big clump of unincorporated butter in your cookies!
