"i'm suing your friends for a million dollars each bc i think you had an abortion"
said another way: "i'll try to control you - my ex-wife - at all costs, or else"
A super shitty dude here in Texas is suing three women who allegedly helped their friend (his ex-wife) access abortion pills. The abusive piece of trash is seeking over a million dollars in damages for “wrongful death”. The first time I heard about it, I made this face exactly: 👹 - perhaps you are too?
The lawsuit tests the boundaries of SB8 - a law here in Texas (passed in 2021) that includes a cruel provision that incentivizes random anti-abortion vigilantes/bounty hunters to sue abortion providers and anyone else who helps people access care. Under the law, this help could be as simple as providing financial support, transportation, or even information. They call it “aiding and abetting”.
To reiterate: Since 2021, anyone who helps someone access an abortion in Texas can be harassed, punished, and sued by any random anti-abortion dipshit. But this lawsuit is one of the first tests of it. The arrogance. The cruelty. The infuriating audacity.
OK back to this lawsuit in particular: the piece of trash is being represented by lawyers Briscoe Cain, a Republican TX state rep, and Jonathan Mitchell, one of the architects of SB8 (wow, how convenient!). The lawsuit highlights the point of SB8: to control, isolate, and scare. It’s a glaring example of an abuser weaponizing the legal/carceral system to exert control over/continue to abuse their ex partner.
It’s designed to isolate people who need abortions from the people who want to help them. It’s meant to make us afraid. But please remember: if you need abortions, there will always be people ready to help you.
I want to express my appreciation for the compassion and support found in friendship. Don’t let this inane legal bullshit fool you! There is absolutely nothing wrong with helping anyone access abortion care. These women supported and cared for their friend - as friends should. I’m grateful for them.
